Marti Friedlander talks

Date

Jun 20, 2010 11:00:00 - 11:45

Details

In the early seventies, Marti Friedlander photographed almost 50 Māori elderly women (kuia) with moko kauae (tattooed mouths and chins). In 1972, these photos were published in Moko: the art of Maori tattooing.

The art of tā moko (Māori traditional tattoo) was dying when Marti took the photos. Marti’s photos show the beauty of tā moko. These photos are a part of the larger story of the rebirth of this almost lost art.

On Tuesday 16 March 2010, Marti Friedlander officially gifted 47 photographic prints known as ‘The Moko Suite’ to Te Papa. Marti will talk about her experience photographing the kuia featured in this stunning book.
