Matariki - Maori Astronomy in the Modern WorldDateJun 22, 2010 11:00:00 - 12:00DetailsMatariki has always symbolised a time of reflection, unity and planning for the future. However, Matariki is only a small part of Māori astronomy. In former times, every tribe had its own unique star lore, underpinned by genealogy, tradition and narrative. This seminar will present a traditional Māori view of astronomy, and discuss its relevance to everyday tribal activities of the past, while providing insight into the place of traditional Māori astronomy in the modern world. Prominent Māori personality Scotty Morrison is probably best known for presenting TV show Te Karere. Well-known for his commitment to reviving the Māori language, he has recently been appointed as Unitec’s Director of Māori Student and Community Engagement.
