Kaihautu: Kaumatua Haare Williams.

Kaumatua Haare Williams will recount his early childhood growing up on the shores of Ohiwa Harbour near Opotiki. He will describe how his grandmother Wairemana and his grandfather Rimaha greeted Matariki in the early morning chill of winter in karakia, waiata and tangi. What they observed came from Tutakangahau of Waikaremoana and Maungapohatu, grandfather of Wairemana. To Haare they seemed like crazy witches.

Kaumatua Haare Williams Having grown up in the traditional Māori way, not learning English until he was eight, Haare went on to become a well-known broadcaster. Now an independent consultant in Māori aspects of education, health, business, art and the media, Haare was the inaugural Pae Arahi at Unitec.
