Matariki Stargazing Programme
Date
14 June 2010 20:30 - 30 June 2010 21:00
DetailsThis year to celebrate the festival, the Big Sky Stargazing team will be hosting a special Matariki stargazing programme each evening (June 14th - 30th), starting with a digital planetarium show (In The Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre), followed by star gazing beneath the real Southern night sky (weather permitting). Throughout the programme, your astronomy guides will look at the cultural and astronomical aspects of this group of spectacular stars. They will also share Māori myths and stories about the formation of the Earth, the Moon, and Māori New Year. Using the planetariums 360 degree image projection system, visitors will also see the stars of Matariki close up and find out why they appear at certain times of the year and not at others.
